You feel God or the universe has abandoned you
You feel abandoned — by God, by the universe, by whatever you once trusted was there — left alone in your suffering, your prayers unanswered, your reaching met with silence. The sense of being forsaken by the sacred is agonizing, and it makes you feel utterly alone, deepening whatever pain first made you reach out.
This sense of being forsaken by the very thing you reached toward is among the sharpest of spiritual pains, and I meet you in it without a cheap answer. The felt absence is not proof of true abandonment — the mystics knew this paradox, that the sense of being abandoned is one of the deepest passages of the spiritual life and not the same as being truly abandoned, for the sun does not leave when a cloud hides it, so the felt absence may be a veiling, a darkness that is part of the way rather than the end. You are allowed to cry out your abandonment honestly — the old prayers are full of the cry, why have you forsaken me, and this raw protest is not faithlessness but one of the most faithful things a person can do, still addressed to the sacred, keeping the relationship alive across the darkness. And look for the presence that comes through others and the world — the sacred often reaches us through a friend who stays, a stranger's kindness, the light through a window, so while your inner sense feels only absence, watch for the presence arriving through doors you had not been watching. What makes you feel abandoned?
