You feel cut off from joy and the divine
You feel cut off from joy and from the divine at once — no delight in life, no sense of the sacred, a flatness where both gladness and holiness used to be. You move through your days unable to feel joy or connection to anything greater, doubly bereft, and you long to feel again both the simple joy of living and the presence of the sacred.
To be cut off from both joy and the divine at once is a double bereavement, and I want to show you that the two are more connected, and more recoverable, than they seem. Joy and the sacred are often blocked together by the same thing — they flow through the same open, present heart and are dammed by the same closures, the depression, the numbness, the walled-off heart, so your being cut off from both at once is likely one blockage, not two problems, which is hopeful, for tending the one may release both. A numbed heart may need tending before it can feel again — you cannot force feeling back by willpower, so tend gently what numbed the heart, the unhealed grief or exhaustion or pain, and let it slowly thaw back into feeling. And small openings of joy can reopen the channel to the sacred — you need not reach directly for the far-off divine, but seek small joys, a moment of beauty, a bit of laughter, and let them reopen the heart through which the sacred also flows. Tend the heart, court small joys, and let both return. What numbed the heart, do you think?
