You've stopped praying and feel worse for it

You stopped praying — perhaps out of doubt, or busyness, or a feeling it was pointless — and you feel worse for it, missing something you cannot quite name. You do not know whether to return, held back by uncertainty about who or what you would pray to, yet aware that its absence has left a hole in you that troubles your spirit.

What’s really going on

That you feel worse for having stopped is the most important clue here, so let us begin with it. The feeling worse tells you the prayer was doing something — we do not usually miss what did nothing for us, so the worsening in its absence is evidence the practice was nourishing something real in you that now goes unfed, which is hopeful: not that you lost a mere habit, but that you stopped feeding a genuine need. Prayer works even if you are unsure who or what you pray to — perhaps you stopped because you grew unsure of its object, but the turning of the heart, the pouring out and reaching, does real work in you regardless of your certainty about who receives it, so you can pray in the midst of unknowing. And you can return to prayer simply, without resolving everything first — prayer does not require a completed theology but only the turning of the heart, which you can do today in whatever honest form feels true, a few words, a silence, a cry, so do not wait to sort out your whole faith before you pray again. Return simply, amid the doubt. What made you stop, and what do you miss?
