Social media leaves you feeling worse every time

You open it out of habit and close it feeling worse — smaller, behind, discontented with a life that felt fine minutes before. Everyone seems happier, more successful, further ahead, and each visit leaves you comparing your ordinary days to their bright highlights and coming up short.

What’s really going on

This ache is worth seeing clearly. You are comparing your life to a curated illusion — not others' actual lives but the polished surfaces they choose to show, the victories without the struggles — so you weigh a true and complete thing against a made and partial one and of course feel small; it is a contest that was never real. Notice the exchange you are making: what you feel before you open the feed, and after, for if it reliably leaves you emptier the trade is a poor one made by habit, not choice. And turn back to your own actual life — its plain days, its true relationships, the small good directly before you — where contentment lives and cannot be found by staring at anyone else's displayed existence. The one who tends their own near life finds the enough comparison never gives. What does the feed make you feel behind on?
