There's no joy or fun in your work

Your work has no joy in it — no fun, no lightness, no satisfaction, just a grim daily grind you endure for the paycheck. You spend most of your waking hours at it, joylessly, and you have started to wonder whether work is simply meant to be this deadening, or whether you have lost something, or landed in the wrong place.

What’s really going on

A joyless job eating your waking hours — let us look at it, because there are two very different things it could be. The joylessness may be in the doing, not only the job — the same work one person drudges through, another finds small pleasures in, so check first the grim spirit you bring, which is the part most in your power, for much fun can be smuggled into ordinary labor. Smuggle small joys into the working day — the shared laugh, the pride in a thing done well, the tiny game made of a dull task, which require not a different job but an attention open to the delight already possible. And if the work is truly joyless at the root, that is worth knowing too — if you have brought lightness and it still deadens you, the joylessness may be real information about the fit between you and it, a signal worth taking seriously. Which does it feel like — your spirit, or the work itself?
