Everything feels like a chore, even the fun stuff

Even the things that are supposed to be enjoyable — the hobby, the outing, the rest — feel like items to get through, tasks to complete, chores on a list. Nothing lands as pleasure anymore; it all feels like effort. Even your fun has become work, and you cannot understand why nothing feels good the way it should.

What’s really going on

When even fun feels like a chore, something has gone amusingly upside down, and it can be righted. You have turned your joys into items on a list — scheduled them, and now approach your pleasures as tasks to complete rather than sink into, so the grim completing spirit drains them, for a joy approached as a chore becomes one. Drop the goal, and just be in the thing — you read to finish, walk for the steps, rest to recharge for more work, and the goal turns the joy into a means, so read for no reason, walk to nowhere, do the thing for being in it, since pleasure lives in the doing not the achieving. And you may be too depleted to feel pleasure at all — a person running on empty experiences even delight as effort, so if this is you, rest truly first, for you cannot squeeze pleasure from an empty well. Which is it, do you think — the grim spirit, or the empty well?
