You feel emotionally flat and can't cry

You want to feel — to cry when you are sad, to feel joy when good things come — and you cannot. Everything is flat and far away, the tears will not come even when you need them, and you have started to fear that you have simply gone numb inside, that the feeling has left for good.

What’s really going on

This flatness is frightening precisely because it feels like the feeling has gone — so let me offer a truer account. First, flatness is often feeling held down, not gone — the tears and emotion are usually there under pressure, unable to reach the surface, so you are not empty or cold but dammed, and a dam is a different problem from a drought. Second, the lid was often lowered for a reason — because it was not safe to feel, because you had to be strong — so the flatness was protection, and it loosens as the system learns feeling is now safe, gently and over time. Third, approach feeling gently, from the edges — small contact with what once moved you, allowing the stirrings without grabbing. And if it is deep and long, a good therapist can help you meet safely what the lid holds. The feeling is waiting, and it returns to gentleness, never force. When did the flatness set in?
