You get anxious in social situations

Gatherings, conversations, being watched — they fill you with dread. You rehearse what to say, replay what you said, feel certain you came across wrong, and often avoid the situations altogether. The fear of being judged makes being around people an ordeal instead of a pleasure.

What’s really going on

Social anxiety is common and quite workable, and it runs on a few correctable errors. First, the spotlight you feel is mostly imagined — others are absorbed in their own impression and notice you far less than you fear, so you are performing for an audience mostly checking its own reflection. Second, turn attention outward, onto genuine curiosity about the other person and the actual conversation, since the inward self-monitoring is both the suffering and its engine. Third, avoidance shrinks your world while gentle, graded approach widens it, building confidence not from feeling ready but from the direct evidence that you survive and the catastrophe does not come. You are not as watched as the fear insists. Where does the anxiety hit you hardest?
