You're afraid of death and it colors everything
You are afraid of death — your own, its certainty, its finality — and the fear colors everything, casting a shadow over your days, surfacing in the dark hours, draining joy from your life. You do not know how to live with the knowledge of your mortality, and the terror of it haunts you, coloring the whole of your experience.
The fear of death is one of the oldest human sorrows, and I will not hand you a false comfort, but I can help you carry it differently. The fear often shrinks when you turn to face it — a fear kept in the corner of the eye grows monstrous, and what we refuse to face rules us from the shadows, so rather than fleeing the thought of death, turn toward it, contemplate it, let the truth of it be present, for the death you look at squarely is less terrible than the one you flee. Death is what makes this life precious, not only what threatens it — it is because our time is limited that each day and love weighs as much as it does, and a life that never ended might drift weightless, so the finitude that frightens you is the same that makes the sunset worth watching. And living fully now is the truest answer to the fear — much of the terror is really the fear of not having truly lived, so let the awareness of death drive you into fuller living, loving more openly and being more present, for a life truly lived is less haunted by its ending. How does the fear show itself in you?
