You are facing your mortality — through age, illness, or a brush with death — and you feel spiritually unprepared, as if you have not done the inner work, not found the faith or peace you need to meet the end. The sense of being caught unready, with time perhaps short, frightens you, and you long to prepare your spirit for what you now face.
To face the end feeling unready is a real fear, and I want to sit with you in it and ease it, for the preparation that matters is nearer and simpler than you think. It is not too late to prepare, however near the end — the spiritual turning does not require years but can happen in whatever time remains, for the heart can turn toward what matters in a moment as truly as over a lifetime, and the traditions are full of those who found the sacred at the very end. Preparation is less about belief than about love and peace — what matters most is not having the theology right but coming to peace, making peace with those you love and have wronged, forgiving and being forgiven, saying the love unspoken, coming to peace within yourself, which is available regardless of what you can be certain of. And you can meet the mystery with trust rather than certainty — no one can hand you sure knowledge of what lies beyond, so cultivate the trust that meets the mystery openly, releasing the demand to know and facing what comes with an open rather than a terrified heart.
