You're exhausted but you can't sleep
You are worn down to the bone, desperate for rest — and the moment you lie down, sleep will not come. Your body is depleted and your mind is somehow switched on, and the harder you try to sleep, the further it slips away, leaving you more exhausted still.
Being exhausted and unable to sleep is a miserable contradiction, and it makes sense once you see the mechanism. Three things help. First, tired and wired are not a contradiction — a system kept too long on alert can be depleted and activated at once, so your body is not broken, only running an alert program that overrides the tiredness. Second, stop trying to sleep, since sleep flees the harder you chase it; release the goal, and simply rest without demand, willing to lie awake calmly, because the pressure itself is often what keeps you awake. Third, give the body the signals of coming rest — dimmed light, no bright screens, a cool quiet slowing — the conditions under which the system consents to power down. You cannot force sleep. You can invite it. What is your mind doing when you lie down?
