When a community is grieving a loss together

Your community — a congregation, a group, a circle of people bound together — is grieving a loss, a death or tragedy that has struck you all. You want to grieve well together, to hold each other through the pain, to mourn in a way that brings comfort and honors the loss rather than leaving everyone to suffer alone. You want your community to be a true refuge in grief.

What’s really going on

To grieve together as a community is one of the oldest and most healing of human acts, and I want to help you do it well. Grieve together rather than each alone — members often carry their pain in isolation when the deepest comfort comes from grieving openly together, for shared grief is lighter, each member's pain held by the others, so gather and mourn openly and let the loss be borne by the whole community rather than by each alone. Let ritual and gathering give the grief a shape — grief that is formless can overwhelm, so use ceremony and memorial and coming-together as vessels that give the grief somewhere to go and mark the loss, holding what would otherwise be overwhelming. And carry each other through the long grief after the gathering ends — the community gathers strongly at first and then disperses, but the grief goes on for months and years, so keep checking on the bereaved and keep the lost one's memory alive through the long aftermath when others have moved on, for that sustained accompaniment is the deeper gift. Grieve together, shape it with ritual, stay for the long way. What loss are you grieving?
