You feel FOMO — always afraid you're missing out

The feeds show you everything you are not part of — the parties, the trips, the achievements, the experiences everyone else seems to be having — and it fills you with a restless fear of missing out. You can never quite settle into where you are, because somewhere else always looks like where you should be.

What’s really going on

This restless fear is worth taking apart. The fear feeds on a vision of everywhere at once — the screen shows all that is happening everywhere, gathered into one display of the life you are supposedly failing to live, and to measure your single life against the sum of all lives is to feel perpetually left out; the comparison is impossible and manufactured. To choose one thing is to miss the rest, always — every choice to be somewhere is a choice not to be everywhere else, so missing out is not a failure but the nature of a finite life, and the one who tries to miss nothing is nowhere fully. And the joy of what you chose is missed by watching what you did not — the FOMO pulls you out of your real present into the phantom of elsewhere, so you genuinely miss the one thing you are in; the cure is to turn fully toward what you chose and live it completely. The wholly present miss nothing that matters. Where do you most feel you should be somewhere else?
