Your memory has gotten worse from outsourcing everything to your device
You cannot remember phone numbers, directions, facts, or plans anymore — the device holds it all, and your own memory has quietly gone slack from disuse. You reach for the screen to recall the smallest things, and you worry, a little, about what it is doing to your mind.
This worry is reasonable, and gently addressable. A faculty unused grows weak — you remember little because the device remembers all, and a mind never exercised softens like an unused muscle; this is not decline but the plain result of handing your remembering to the machine, a real convenience at a real cost, and seeing the trade lets you choose it rather than drift into it. So keep some remembering for yourself — the numbers of those closest, the route you travel, the things that matter — held in your own mind, for a memory used stays stronger, and there is richness in carrying what you cherish within you. And attention is the root of memory — much apparent forgetting is really failing attention, half in the screen as things pass, so the deeper repair is presence: attend fully to your life and it becomes more memorable of itself. The truly present have, without trying, a fuller memory of a fuller life. What would you most want to keep remembering yourself?
